The Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Model (OLAM): Formulation, Validadation, and Challenges
Tipo de evento: Seminário LNCC
OLAM is a global numerical simulation model that originated with the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS) in 2001. Its primarymotivation was to combine the best features and capabilities of two classes of models, global and limited-area, which have evolved somewhat independently fordecades. Limited-area models specialize in high resolution representationof atmospheric motions and surface features and generally use moresophisticated parameterizations of clouds and precipitation, turbulence, radiation, and surface processes. However, they require specification ofconditions at the lateral domain boundaries and are thus dependent onobservations or a separate global model to provide them.OLAM achieves high local resolution over specified regions of its globaldomain by means of local mesh refinement using a seamless network oftriangular or hexagonal grid cells. This talk will describe the formulation of OLAM, including the governingdynamic equations, grid structure, numerical formulation, andparallelization. Results from a variety of standard dynamical tests will bepresented for both global and local processes. Some limitations andshortcomings of the current model formulation will be discussed along withideas and plans for future improvement.
